Custom Earplugs And Hearing Protection To Prevent Damage to Your Ears

Though hearing loss is irreversible, it is often preventable. We know that exposure to loud noise without protection puts you at greater risk for hearing loss, but custom hearing protection can help you continue hearing your best for as long as possible.

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a common cause of hearing loss that involves frequent or ongoing exposure to sounds with an intensity level over 85 dB (the sound of an idling bulldozer or normal conversation) for an extended period of time. However, a single extreme noise event, like an explosion (210 dB+), can also cause permanent, irreparable hearing loss.

Fortunately, Alaska Hearing and Tinnitus Center provides custom earplugs and hearing protection to prevent damage to your ears.

Thanks for the custom swim plugs! Great service, great staff! I’m excited the plugs even offer 30 decibel reduction for noise reduction when I’m not swimming!

I am an avid shooter and went in to see about custom earplugs. Dr. Emily made the casts right then and there, very easy and VERY professional. The price was very reasonable to get a mutli-cam colored custom earplugs. Thank you Dr. Emily!

How Loud Is Too Loud?

Your ears can handle 85 dB of sound unprotected for up to 8 hours, but the length of time your ears can endure sound exceeding 85 dB without hearing protection decreases significantly with each increase of 3 dB of intensity.

Four hours of exposure to 88 dB can cause damage, while damage occurs after 2 hours at 91 dB and at 94 dB in 1 hour. If your unprotected ears are exposed to sounds in excess of 110 dB for more than 90 seconds, your ears experience severe damage, but it takes only 7 seconds to do harm to your unprotected ears at intensity levels of 120 dB.

For perspective, lawn equipment, chainsaws, motorcycles, snowmobiles, and power tools have noise levels of between 90 and 105 dB, which means that if you use them for more than 20 or 30 minutes, you should be using hearing protection to prevent damage. Listening to music on headphones or earbuds at high levels (110 to 115 dB) is particularly dangerous, as is a major sporting event, live concert, or a nightclub (up to 135 dB) while discharging a firearm can reach an intensity level in excess of 145 dB.

Benefits Of Custom Hearing Protection

Custom hearing protection involves creating a custom mold of your earplugs to the unique contours of your ears. Because they provide a more secure fit, you experience a greater level of comfort, and they ensure that your hearing protection stays in place during whatever activity you’re involved in.

In addition, there are different types of hearing protection. Speaking with your audiologist about the noisy environments that you are seeking protection from helps us select the best type of protection for you.

● Accurate frequency response, so you’ll hear a full range of sounds, but at a reduced volume. This allows for protection when sound awareness is important for safety on the job.
● Venting allows sound to pass both ways, so your voice won’t reverberate inside your ears. Venting also decreases the level of protection which excludes its use depending on the environment.
● Precision-engineered filters for measurable protection with clearer and more natural sound.
● Medical-grade silicone materials make it possible to wear them for extended periods of time without irritation or discomfort.
● Replaceable sound filters allow you to select the level of sound protection you need for each situation. These filters aren’t applicable for every type of noise protection.
